Orthodontics is one of the youngest, but also the most dynamically developing fields of dentistry.

It deals with the treatment of malocclusions and correcting abnormalities in the positioning of the jaw and maxilla in adult and child patients.

Why should bite defects be corrected?

Orthodontic treatment is carried out for health reasons, but also for aesthetic and functional purposes (e.g. eliminating speech defects). It is possible regardless of the patient's age - both in children and adults.

Malocclusion is a problem for many people today. According to the evolutionary trend, the human face and jaw, including the maxilla and mandible, are getting smaller, which consequently leads to tooth crowding.

In the treatment of malocclusion, safe and comfortable low-friction appliances are used, so small forces are used to move the teeth. Excellent results are achieved in less time than usual and guarantee the durability of the treatment.

It should be remembered that a cured bite is not only straight teeth, but also a reduced risk of caries and periodontal processes.

What does an orthodontic consultation look like? The first visit to the orthodontist

Orthodontic treatment at our Clinic in Poznań always begins with a consultation visit. The aim of the first visit is to understand the patient's problems and needs as well as the reasons that lead them to undertake orthodontic treatment.

The doctor conducts a general and dental interview, and then proceeds to examine the patient, based on which they assess whether treatment is possible.

During this visit, a pantomographic and cephalometric image is taken and a digital scan is performed for diagnostic models, based on which the doctor analyzes the patient's bite. This is necessary to determine the treatment plan and the most beneficial solutions, as well as the estimated cost and time of orthodontic treatment.

What does orthodontic treatment involve?

Modern orthodontic treatment is carried out using removable and fixed braces, as well as Clear Aligner or Invisalign type overlays. Orthodontic appliances are tailored to the individual needs and requirements of the patient, which allows achieving the desired effect in the shortest possible time.

What are the characteristics of different orthodontic appliances?

Removable brace

Removable braces - inserted and removed by the patient themselves. They are mainly used in children and adolescents during the period of changing dentition from deciduous to permanent (4 -12 years old).

Removable braces take the form of an acrylic plate designed individually for the patient and adapted to the corrected defect. The corrective possibilities of this device are quite limited - while it is possible to eliminate tilting or leaning of the teeth, moving the teeth is not fundamentally simple.

Removable orthodontic braces should be used in accordance with the recommendations of the attending physician - in practice, this is usually several hours a day - both during the day and at night.

Fixed braces

Fixed braces are brackets that are glued to the teeth for the entire duration of their treatment, as well as metal arches that are replaced during the process. Depending on the patient's expectations, there are various types of fixed braces to choose from:

  • metal
  • self-ligating metal (without elastics)
  • cosmetic (clear brackets)
  • self-ligating cosmetic.

In the case of self-ligating braces, check-up visits are less frequent, and the treatment is usually somewhat shorter.

Invisalign / Spark / Clear Aligner

Invisalign / Spark / Clear Aligner - these are innovative methods of treating certain malocclusions using special transparent overlays, which the patient uses in a specific, individually determined sequence, usually changing the type of overlay every week. In the meantime, monitoring visits take place to track the progress of the treatment and allow for the production of further overlays.

Thanks to this, the treatment is extremely precise.

The overlays are invisible during daily use. This solution provides the patient with the highest aesthetics and allows to avoid the discomfort associated with orthodontic treatment. While wearing them, the patient can talk or laugh without any worries.

Importantly, the overlays can be easily removed for eating or cleaning, making maintaining oral hygiene extremely easy. It is usually recommended to wear them for at least 20 hours a day.

What is retention treatment?

It should be remembered that every orthodontic treatment consists of two stages:

  • treatment with a corrective appliance
  • stabilizing treatment with a so-called retainer. It usually lasts as long as the correction of the defect

The patient receives special plastic overlays, which should be worn as often as possible. Often, a special metal wire is also attached to the lower arch. All these actions aim to maintain the teeth in the achieved position.

How often are check-up visits?

Depending on the established treatment plan and individual patient requirements, they occur at different frequencies: every 4 to 8 weeks - both for removable and fixed braces. During control visits, the doctor monitors the progress of treatment and adjusts the force with which the brace acts on the teeth.

Check-ups are very important for the proper course of treatment, and neglecting them can have disastrous consequences. Without constant control, the duration of treatment will be extended or the orthodontic appliance may have the opposite effect to the expected one, for example, deepen the existing irregularity or cause a new malocclusion.
